ARTIST BIO

A Visual Journey

I am a self-taught willow sculptress and artist based on the beautiful island of Anglesey.

I have always had a passion and talent for anything creative from a very young age. I carried this passion on into high school and A levels, with the intention to go on to university and study fine art but then decided to keep my artistic and sculptural endeavours as a passion and hobby deciding to focus on a more scientific degree path. In recent years I have returned to and made time for my love of sculpting. I have also taught art and crafts locally to primary aged children, sharing my passion and enthusiasm for all things creative.

I have always found sculpture easy, almost instinctive especially when creating animal forms.
My first ventures in sculpture were in clay, but in recent years I have found creating sculptures out of willow to be my niche. I work totally from imagination, I follow no patterns or formula, preferring to work by eye and touch, using my skills to manipulate the willow rods using bare hands, letting the sculpture evolve organically and grow into a thing of beauty and form. I try to give my sculptures a feeling of movement and expression of the animal depicted within.

I create unique bespoke animal sculptures in willow for the garden & home, no two the same. I like to use different varieties of willow so I can choose from a large palette of colours and textures.
I make horses, deer, farm animals, smaller animals, birds and architectural statement pieces.
Most are life size and are a labour of love, taking anything from a few days to a month or more to make.
My very favourite work to date was my first ever attempt at making a willow sculpture, a large life size stag. I was advised by family and friends to start small with my first endeavours. This was my version of small, as I was so enthused with this new medium in sculpture. My current project which I can’t wait to finish is a life size horse.

CREATING A WILLOW SCULPTURE.

Initial Ideas & Sketches.

I work totally from imagination, My sculptures often start with a sketch, and detailed research enabling me to decided early on, the character of the animal or bird I am portraying.

The willow sculptures I make vary in size and construction time. A life size stag can take up to 3 weeks to make, something smaller like a heron can take two days.

Sculptures are usually life size, but can be tailored to your individual specifications and budget. A significant amount of time and preparation goes into each piece prior to it being constructed.

Construct & Weld

When you think of a sculptor you may not think of angle grinders, bolt cutters and a welder’s mask as being obvious attire or tools but they are essential for my larger sculptures. I start my larger pieces by making a sketch of the internal armature or skeleton of the animal I am making.

I then use a strong steel to weld and construct its internal frame in order to support the woven external willow skin.

Weaving & Finishing Touches.

I use only the most basic of tools when I start the weaving stage of my sculptures, secateurs & occasionally pliers. Other than that, it’s all done by hand. I follow no patterns or formula, preferring to work by eye and touch, using my skills to manipulate the willow rods using my bare hands, letting the sculpture evolve organically and grow into a thing of beauty and form. I try to give my sculptures a feeling of movement and expression of the animal depicted within.

Finally once the sculpture is finished and left to dry, I add a spray coat of wood preservative to protect the willow and extend its life.

Sculptures can be of anything you desire. Be creative and indulge your imagination!
I offer local delivery, especially of larger life size sculptures at a reasonable extra cost.
I can also deliver larger sculptures over a wider region of the UK by prior arrangement. Just ask!
